I spent my weekend (9 - 4 both days) in hunter education classes. It was a lot of sitting, but now I can hunt in Missouri, and out of state if I wish to. I got a cool hunter orange patch to sew on my jacket (?) and everything!
I also decided that I am going to buy a shotgun. It will be the first gun I've ever owned all by myself. I am sorting through Dennis's reams of gun information, trying to see what I'd like. I am leaning towards a 20 gauge. Hooray :)

Everyone born after 1967 is required to take it in Missouri before any permits will be issued. Missouri allows rifle hunting for deer, unlike all of Illinois and parts of Wisconsin. My deer rifle is a CZ 550 American in 6.5x55 Swedish. The price tag on that is a bit much for me right now, it isn't exactly a first gun, so I am borrowing it. If I decide it's too heavy, I've got a fall-back Winchester Model 94 .30-30 to borrow.
The shotgun is going to be for small game, maybe upland birds, and maybe turkey. I've been around guns my whole life, as my Dad is a gunsmith, but I've never hunted anything. So I want to try a broad range of things, to see exactly which kind of hunting interests me. The 20 GA. is going to be useful for a range of things, and since I am smaller, I don't really want to handle a 12 GA. and shoot it all day long. Since I am probably not going to hunt geese, the 20 GA. should suffice without tearing my arm off at the shoulder.
